How to give away an appliance in 3 steps

1

Take a photo

A photo of the appliance plugged in or in its setting. Jetroque's AI identifies the type, the category, and suggests a description.

2

Add the key details

Brand, model, year if known, condition, dimensions, energy rating. The more precise, the more credible.

3

Arrange pickup

The recipient arranges transport (truck, friend, rental van). You agree on a time slot in the chat.

Checklist: a well-described appliance sells 4× faster

Before posting, mention:

  • The appliance works without unusual noise or leaks
  • The brand and model (or a photo of the rating label)
  • The year or approximate age
  • The exact dimensions (W × D × H) — essential for a fridge, oven, or dishwasher
  • The energy rating if visible
  • The cosmetic condition (dents, scratches, seals)
  • For a fridge: confirm it has been defrosted and cleaned before pickup
  • The floor and whether there is an elevator
  • Your availability for pickup

Safety: appliances to watch out for

A few essential precautions with appliances:

  • Fridges, freezers, air conditioners: contain refrigerant gas. Never dismantle, never puncture. If the appliance no longer works, take it to a specialized eco-organization.
  • Induction appliances: let the recipient know that their cookware must be compatible.
  • Small appliances (coffee maker, toaster): check that the cord is not damaged and that there are no signs of overheating.
  • Vacuums: specify whether the bag/tank is new and whether all accessories are included.
  • Any appliance that is broken must not be posted — this is a violation of the Terms of Use (article 11).

Why does this matter so much for the environment?

Appliances are one of the most polluting categories in the home: a fridge represents several hundred kilograms of materials, and replacing it generates a considerable carbon footprint, dominated by manufacturing. Extending the life of an appliance by a few years is therefore one of the most impactful environmental actions you can take.

Every appliance given away via Jetroque avoids:

  • New production (raw materials, energy, intercontinental transport)
  • Premature end-of-life processing (dismantling, partial recovery)
  • For the recipient: a purchase (significant financial savings)

Frequently asked questions — Appliances

Can I give away a fridge or a washer on Jetroque?

Yes, as long as it is working and clean. Specify the brand, model, year if known, dimensions, and energy efficiency. For fridges, mention whether the appliance has been defrosted and cleaned.

Who transports the appliance?

For large appliances, the recipient arranges transport. In Quebec, if no taker is found within 60 days and for Jetroque+ members, Jetroque organizes free home pickup.

My appliance is broken — can I still post it?

No. Jetroque only accepts working appliances. A broken appliance should be taken to a specialized eco-organization (SERI, ÉEQ in Quebec; Eco-systèmes/Ecologic in France).

How much does the service cost?

Giving and swapping are free. The 60-day pickup is included with Jetroque+ ($97 CAD/year) or free for residents of a Partner City.

What happens to appliances picked up by Jetroque?

They are passed on to a partner non-profit (reuse centre, thrift resource, community organization) that can give them away or refurbish them. Jetroque never resells collected appliances.
