Give away your sports equipment

Bike gathering dust in the garage, skis you've replaced, guitar collecting cobwebs, camping tent unused for 3 years? Give it all to a neighbour who will actually use it. On Jetroque, sports equipment finds a new home within hours in larger cities.

What sports & leisure equipment can I post?

Any equipment that is functional, clean and poses no safety risk. The main subcategories:

Spotlight on bikes: what works best

Bikes are the most exchanged sports & leisure item on Jetroque, especially in large francophone cities. A few tips to maximize your chances:

  • Full profile photo + close-ups of the pedals, derailleur and tyre condition
  • Frame size clearly stated (XS/S/M/L/XL or cm). This is the number one criterion for a prospective cyclist.
  • Type of use: city, road, mountain, fixie, Dutch, children's
  • Condition of brakes, derailleur and tyres — be honest: a bike "in need of a tune-up" will find a taker if you say so
  • Included accessories: lock, new helmet, pump, saddlebag, basket, lights
  • If you're in Quebec: specify whether the bike is winter-ready or not (studded tyres)
💡 Children's bikes: huge demand since kids grow fast. Include the recommended approximate age (3–5 years, 6–8 years, etc.) and wheel size (12", 14", 16", 20", 24").

Musical instruments: a special case

Instruments in good condition find a new owner very quickly — parents wanting to introduce their children to music, curious beginners, casual musicians. Tips:

  • Guitars: specify the brand, model (acoustic, electric, classical), string condition and whether a case is included
  • Digital pianos / keyboards: number of keys, brand, condition of the keys and pedals, power supply
  • Acoustic pianos: note that transport is heavy (200–400 kg) — the recipient must arrange for a specialist mover
  • Drum kits: full photo + detail of cymbals and drum heads, shell sizes
  • Wind instruments (saxophone, clarinet, trumpet): specify whether the instrument has been cleaned/disinfected, or whether it needs a trip to a repair shop
  • Accessories: sheet music, tuner, metronome, amp — everything is welcome

How to post in 3 steps

  1. Photograph the equipment from multiple angles. Natural light is best.
  2. Specify the details relevant to the subcategory (size, brand, condition, accessories).
  3. "Give" or "Swap" mode. Swapping works great for sports gear ("my 170 cm skis for your mountain bike").

Checklist: a well-written listing

Before posting, verify:

  • The equipment is functional and clean
  • No undisclosed safety risk (broken brake, frayed strap)
  • The technical specifications are stated (size, brand, model, year if known)
  • The included accessories are listed
  • For an instrument: the condition of consumable parts (strings, drum heads, reeds)
  • Transport requirements are noted if the item is bulky (piano, kayak, trampoline)
  • Helmets and protective gear are not posted as giveaways

Why give away your sports equipment?

Sports equipment is typically used actively for a few months or years before being stored and forgotten. Yet its manufacture carries a significant environmental cost: a new bike emits between 100 and 200 kg of CO₂, a pair of skis around 50 kg, and an acoustic wooden guitar around 30 kg.

Giving it to a neighbour who will genuinely use it means doubling the item's useful life — one of the best possible ecological ratios. Full impact methodology →

Frequently asked questions — Sports & leisure

How do I give away a bike for free?

Download Jetroque, take a profile photo and close-ups, then post in "Give" mode. Specify frame size, type (road/city/mountain/children's), tyre and brake condition, and any repairs needed. Very much in demand in urban areas.

What sports equipment is accepted?

Any functional and safe equipment: bikes, skis, snowboards, rackets, balls, fitness gear, instruments, tents, sleeping bags. Helmets excluded (safety: must be replaced after any impact).

Can I give away a musical instrument?

Yes. There is huge demand for guitars, keyboards, digital pianos, violins and drum kits. Specify the brand, model, condition of strings/drum heads and any accessories. For acoustic pianos: mention the need for specialist transport.

My bike has a buckled wheel or broken brakes — can I post it?

Yes, as long as you clearly state the defects. Many DIYers or community bike shops are happy to take on repairs. Never post it as functional if it isn't.

What about camping gear?

Very welcome: tents (check for mould), sleeping bags (washed), sleeping pads, camp stoves (no full canisters), lanterns. Hikers and first-time campers are always keen.
