🛡️ Baby safety: the golden rule

⚠️ SAFETY FIRST: some baby products have strict rules. Here is what you absolutely must know before posting.

🚗 Car seats

The car seat is the most safety-sensitive piece of baby gear. Before giving one away:

  • It has never been in an accident (even a minor one — an invisible impact can compromise the structure). If in doubt → do not give it away.
  • It is not expired: manufacturers specify a service life (often 6 to 10 years — check the label).
  • It meets current standards: i-Size / R-129 in Europe, FMVSS 213 / Transport Canada in Canada. Older seats that comply only with outdated standards (old R-44/04) are not recommended.
  • Manual and all parts are present (straps, padding, complete cover).
⚠️ Many families prefer to buy a new car seat to eliminate any risk. If you are giving yours away, be fully transparent about its history. When in doubt, look into specialized recycling.

🛏️ Cribs, playpens, mattresses

  • No mould on the mattress (often invisible — inspect at the slightest doubt).
  • Complies with EN 716 (Europe) or Health Canada standards.
  • No loose parts (missing screws, loose slats).
  • For mattresses: only give away if the mattress is recent and clean.

👶 Cosmetics, bottles, soothers

  • Bottles: OK if in very good condition + new teats provided.
  • Used soothers and teething rings: not recommended (hygiene).
  • Opened baby cosmetics: not accepted (opening date uncertain).
  • Cloth diapers: OK if clean and sanitized.

Baby clothes spotlight: the fastest-moving category

Baby clothes are the most active item in this category. Children go up a size every few months, and every parent is desperately searching for the next size up. Tips:

  • Post by size ("bundle size 6–9 months", "20 pieces size 12 months"). That is the number-one search criterion.
  • Consistent seasonal bundles: "winter bundle 18 months" or "summer bundle 2 years" rather than a mixed assortment.
  • Specify the appropriate season and the brand if it is a premium label (Petit Bateau, Bonpoint, Cyrillus, Souris Mini).
  • Mention whether the clothes have been recently washed.
  • Very gender-specific items (very pink, very blue) may get fewer responses — mixed bundles do better.
💡 Top tip: a new parent will be looking for complete bundles to save time and money. A "50-piece bundle 0–3 months gender-neutral" finds a taker within the hour in dense urban areas.

How to post in 3 steps

  1. Group by size / age / function.
  2. Photograph the full set + details (size labels visible, accessories included).
  3. Always specify: size / recommended age, condition, brand, history (car seat, crib), included accessories.

Checklist: baby gear ready to post

Before posting, verify:

  • The item is clean and sanitized (clothes washed, plastics wiped down)
  • No safety defects (missing screws, frayed straps, torn fabric)
  • The size or age is specified
  • The brand and model are indicated where relevant
  • For a car seat: full history (no accident, not expired, current standard)
  • For clothes: posted as a bundle and by size
  • All parts and accessories are present

Why does this matter for families?

Having a baby is expensive: the first year costs $4,000 to $6,000 on average (stroller $200–$800, crib $100–$300, clothes $500–$1,000, etc.). Yet almost all of this gear is used for just a few months before it no longer fits or is no longer needed.

Giving away your baby gear on Jetroque means:

  • Providing financial relief to a neighbouring family
  • Freeing up space in your home (a huge win for many parents)
  • Avoiding the production of new equipment and its carbon footprint
  • Building a neighbourly connection with other families (regular exchanges are possible)

Frequently asked questions — Baby & infant gear

Can I give away a used car seat?

It is a sensitive matter. The seat must never have been in an accident (even a minor one), must not be expired (6–10 years depending on the manufacturer), must meet current standards (i-Size / R-129 in Europe, FMVSS 213 in Canada), and all parts and the manual must be present. Many families prefer new — be transparent about the history.

How do I give away a stroller?

Photo folded + unfolded, brand, model, age of use, condition of wheels/fabric/straps, included accessories (canopy, basket, rain cover, car seat adapter). Clean the fabric. Very quick: often matched the same day.

What baby clothes can I give away?

Any clean, unstained, undamaged clothing. Post by size (newborn, 3, 6, 12, 24 months…). Bundles go in a matter of hours.

What about bottles, soothers, and nursing gear?

Bottles in very good condition are OK with new teats included. Used soothers and teething rings: not recommended (hygiene). Manual breast pumps are OK with new accessories; electric ones: sanitized + new contact parts.

What about activity toys?

See also the toys category. For 0–3 year olds: no detachable pieces (choking hazard), cleaned. Stuffed animals: recently washed.

What about children's clothes (beyond 24 months)?

See also the clothing category. Post by size (years or EU size) and by season. Back-to-school clothes in good condition move very quickly at the start of the school year.
